Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has launched a new accelerated aviation program in partnership with Aviate Flight School, allowing students to earn a commercial pilot license through a Professional Aeronautics Certificate in as little as one year. The program was created to address a growing pilot shortage, with industry leaders noting that retirements are outpacing the number of new pilots entering the workforce. Officials say the program costs just under $60,000—less than many four-year degrees—and provides a faster pathway into a professional aviation career. Graduates will earn a commercial pilot license after about 250 flight hours, though they must accumulate 1,500 hours and obtain an Airline Pilot Certificate before qualifying to fly for major airlines.
