A new weather simulator called ClimaDrive integrates real historical weather data into Microsoft Flight Simulator and Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D to expose pilots to realistic and dynamic weather conditions. Its creator, flight instructor and aeronautics Professor Chris Johnson, developed the tool to help pilots experience how quickly weather can deteriorate in flight and to improve weather-related decision-making. ClimaDrive provides simulated preflight briefings using actual weather products so pilots can practice interpreting forecasts and making go/no-go decisions in a safe environment. The article notes that weather remains a leading factor in fatal general aviation accidents, especially when pilots continue VFR into worsening conditions, and that enhanced simulation training could help reduce those risks.
